At the national conference in Hartford, we discussed the overall decline in NAI section membership. Surveys completed before the conference point to a lack in:

  • Finances
  • Communications
  • Quality/quantity of services

To gain a better understanding, section directors developed another brief survey for attendees. One question asked, “What are you struggling with in your life/job?” Many responses from our section mentioned time. Whether thinking about NAI or your own facility, more time would no doubt cure any of the above. My response is two-fold…

Having felt short-changed myself, I picked up a copy of First Things First (Covey, et al.) They share pros and cons of earlier time management paradigms, then present an interesting approach based on time and direction. It’s been helpful in setting life priorities, focusing my efforts and even turning down opportunities. Ask around. Seek other recommendations and find what works best for you. The irony is whatever you choose – set aside some time to internalize the approach.

With regard to your job, have you considered using project management software? Smashing Magazine delivered a keen review of 15 Useful Project Management Tools. Some are more complex than others. If you have limited finances they list free tools as well.

To share a little, the ZWPA recently signed with Basecamp. It’s easier to navigate and more intuitive than some other programs. With it, the section board and committee members can better orchestrate the delivery of member services. Value comes from its ability to archive projects, milestones and action items in a common accessible place. Having a track record helps us refine leadership roles by providing guidance for those serving in the future. This becomes important when your membership stretches across the country and globe.

Imagine what this would do for your office or facility. If you collaborate with other divisions or companies for programs, events, conferences ,exhibits, etc., it’s worth a little time to investigate these resources. Again, determine your needs. Find the best fit.

As for finances, communications, and the quality/quantity of services, NAI is still gathering information. Please note, however, we set aside extra time during May’s board meeting to determine what (if any) action is needed. Either way the ZWPA will continue improving its services to provide better support in your life/job. Whether personal or professional, growth takes time. If managed poorly, we are left exactly where we started.
